So there I was pondering nothing and I had an idea, not that it was an original idea, but an idea nonetheless. I thought about creating a web-based MUD (Multi-User Dungeon). For those that are not familiar with MUDs, they are text-based rpgs. You type commands to do things, like n to walk north. They've been around for quite sometime and back in the hayday they were very popular. Some people even flunked out of college because of them.

Anyways, I thought about created one for the web. but rather than typing all your commands you'd click links.Being that its going to be on the web I wanted to use PHP/MySQL. As far as the SQL database would go, I wanted to do something like this. I would have a table with a row named 0-10, and 10 columns named 0-10. it would look something like this.

Each field would contain the id from a different database that would contain the info about the current location.

This is the part I'm wondering about. If I had a lot of players would that cause too much server traffic?

hehe have you watched the videos to or downloaded forsaken sanctum1.0? The game I just released. It works exactly like that but has 45 x 45 around 2000 squares per zone and can hold unlimited amount of zones. You could actually got around 100 x 100, 10,000 possible locations per zone with a good server.

Int he videos and source i show you how to manage this and not make a load on the DB. I had around 300 players, most were concurrent because it was beta and all ran fine.

lol, I guess great minds think alike! :mrgreen: but seriously no I haven't seen the videos yet, and I stress yet but cause I love watching tutorial videos. Its how I learn so much :)

And there are many, many other games that are just like this. Halls' Forsaken Sanctum is a bit different, since it uses a Javascript map for movement, but there are many browser-based MUDs just like you explained. They are called "PBBGs" for Persistent Browser-Based Games.

actually 1.0 uses only css and html. This was before I got into Javascript :)

yeah the new one i just released. my newer games use Javascript though ;)

The problem I have with javascript is that the user can see it and if there good enough they can change what is on the page with it. Kinda like SQL injection.
