For about $7 you can get this book that teaches you about VB2008 while you are building a web browser. It doesn't get too complicated, but what more can you want for the same amount of money to buy a combo at Burger King? It also teaches in the context of a real project, which is nice. I don't know why it doesn't have a good rating on Amazon, except maybe it is too basic for most people buying the books (who are almost all experienced programmers).
If you don't want to go that route, then first build a calculator. It sounds simple, but if you want it to handle more than 1 operation in the string (like "23*42+8-12/6"), you want it to handle that entry string scientifically (ie ^ before * / before + - ), you want a display like on a real calculator (no separate text entry boxes like on some calculator projects), and you want all of the keys on a basic calculator, you will find it is a formidable project. If you are past that, then just think of something you would like to use personally, and that will drive your development of it.
You could also learn some of the other branches of .NET that use Visual Basic, such as WPF, Silverlight, ASP.NET, .NET Web Services, etc. It can be hard to think of what to do with vanilla VB or C#, but in the context of these newer technologies, ideas can just spring to mind!

Re: Vb 2008
VB is simple yet complex. I have been using VBA for the past 5 months, become somewhat of a expert at it. Been building some crazy Macros for Excell and outlook..But how I learned was trial by fire. I just found something I wanted to build and googled how to do each part. Slowly your project takes place and you learn.
I will be the first to say reading a book from front to back is a wealth of knowledge but may never teach you anything unless you have a goal in mind and you build it as you go.

Actually, VBA has no relation to VB 2008. VBA is actually based on VB6, which is of no relation to VB.NET. VB.NET is now basically the same thing as C#. They are just a different dialect of the exact same underlying language.

wasn't saying they were, was saying how I learned it quickly by using it for a purpose.
You are right though, VBA is basically using VB6 with a few extra and minus features.

Re: Vb 2008
yeah ive made a calculator and web browser. thats easy stuff. What im trying to learn how to do now is force a mouse click but i cant find anything on google because most of it is for vb6. I know how to move the mouse and type but just not click. Im trying to make myself an automatic login into my email and all i need to know is how to click the left mouse button.
EDIT: Just found out how to do it through youtube. Now im going to start making a login for my email. You guys have anymore program Ideas?
