I'm a lurker no more =D

Post by Mrguyman »

Hi all! I lurked around these forums for awhile now, so I decided to finally sign up. I like this place a lot, because the people are friendly, there's no flaming or harassing, and everyone helps each other. Plus, the owner of the site and forum (that's you halls xD) posts very frequently too, so we can all get to know him (unlike some other forums >.>). The mods are nice, and not power-hungry noobs who act like jerks :P Anyways, enough with the compliments, I'm going to say a little (tiny) bit about myself.

I research game development a lot, but I *never* actually made a game. I swear, I downloaded so many engines and tools I probably know them all. But alas, I'm not a good artist, and I'm unable to program (the closest thing I can do to programming is HTML :X), and I'm not creative. BUT, I got a new laptop a week ago with a lot of RAM and a powerful graphics card, so I can try out all of those *good* tools for once!

Anyways, what I'm trying to say in those two long paragraphs is... Hai thar! :D

P.S: I am socially impaired, so bear with me with stuff like that

Welcome to the forums and I think I can speak for all of us when I say thank you for the compliments, we do our best.

Do you have any goals that you are interested in sharing? Are you looking into becoming an artist or game programmer now that you have better hardware? Or do you like watching others' progress in game design?

I hope your stay here is what you are looking for :)

Welcome to the forums, as I echo LKH with both his comment and questions.

Welcome!

I have to say that your info was a lot like my first couple of years in indie game development. I loved it, but I ended up just doing more research than coding and didn't end up doing anything for about the first two years. I have been involved in one way or another (at least researching and posting on forums) in the indie dev community for about 8 years now. What finally broke me of my old habits and made me sit down and start making something was when I set my immediate sights much lower and just made a small, single-player text-based game (I originally turned to indie deving to make a huge, 3D fantasy MMORPG, so quite a step down). That led to more learning, more work, and more fun. Now I can say I thoroughly enjoy web coding, including PHP, Javascript (jQuery is a huge part of that, though lol), Flash (still trying to learn that), Silverlight and ASP.NET. What I like about it is that you can see progress in just an hour or so of coding, or even less depending on what you are working on. It is not like building a 3D engine in C++, where you have to be coding for non-stop for weeks before you can even get to a place where you can try running it (at which time it will error out with about 50-something errors, of course).

Try out the PHP tutorials here, and I bet you will fall in love with PBBG (browser-based PHP/Javascript RPGs) development as well.

exact same story, been programming for 3 years, only this past year (2010) did i really start sticking with it. welcome to the forums and i hope you have a great stay! i know i have been.

And if you want to start making web browser games, definitely advise you to go look at Halls tutorial, he is very skilled and explains everything clearly. He is quite a amazing teacher. his tutorial is the best i have ever been following. period.

Heh thanks for replying everybody. The game I'm looking to make is probably a 2D rpg loosely based on the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. It's basically about clans of cats (yes, cats) who live in the wild, hunt prey, train apprentices, etc. It's a pretty good series, and many people make their own fan fiction based on it, so I want to make a simple game like it.

P.S: To be honest, I didn't think of a good game idea yet, so I came up with this one on the spot. Not necessarily the game I'm devoting my life to making ;)
