Need a new GFX card. Torn between 2

Post by Torniquet »

Hola people!

Desperately need a new gfx card. I have started gaming more and more, and my gfx card just isnt up to it.

My current card is an ATI Radeon 4350. (very crappeh lol)

I am looking at either one of the following.

Asus GT 440 1GB GDDR5

Spec:

Graphics Engine GeForce® GT440
Bus Standard PCI Express® 2.0
Video Memory 1GB GDDR5
Engine Clock 822 MHz
CUDA Cores 96
Shader Clock 1644 MHz
Memory Clock 3200MHz (800MHz GDDR5)
Memory Interface 128 bit
DVI Max. Resolution 2560 * 1600
DSub Max. Resolution 2048 * 1536
D-sub Output YES X1 (Native)
DVI Output YES X1 (Native DVI-I)
HDMI Output YES X1 (Native)
HDCP compliant YES

OR

Gigabyte GT 440 OC 1GB DDR3

Specification
Core Clock 830 MHz (std 810 MHz)
Memory Clock 1800 MHz
Shader Clock 1660 MHz
Memory Size 1GB DDR3 memory
Bus Type PCI Express 2.0
Memory Bus 128-bit
Stream
Processors
96
Memory type 64Mx16
GV-N440D3-1GI Specification Table
DirectX 11 Yes
DVI Port DVI-I (Support Dual-link DVI-I)
HDMI Yes
D-sub Yes
HDCP Yes

The main game I play at the moment is DayZ (Arma 2 mod) and it is pretty gfx hungry.

The gigabyte card is the cheaper of the 2 (by about £12).

I have 8gb ram, Phenom II dual core 3.4 ghz processor with an Asus M4A78LT-M board.

Although the processor and MB might not be the best in the world, the gfx card is the suckiest thing by far lol.

Anyone offer an opinion on which one I should get? lol

A new computer?

Gigabyte seems better, but is that not a rather slow clock rate for a gaming card now a-days? I have the 430 mobility in my laptop, it manages to play some GTA4 for an hour or two before getting too warm, and I wouldn't really call the quality it makes great either.

If I were you I'd get something a little more expensive, you'll enjoy it much better.

and i thought Nvidia GTX 560 was the best xD I suck at hardware
Mine is a gt 320, not the best, not the worst, but enough for coding and all games so far.

Although a new computer would be nice, unless someone is going to shell out for it for me... I can't afford one.

My processor and ram handle just fine. Im not all about the latest games, as personally I find alot of them really boring. Game play comes well above graphics for me, it just so happens that my card I have now cant run squat lol. When the time comes and the money comes, I will invest in replacement cpu and MB. It just so happens that DayZ and Arma, are heavy on the graphics, and to enjoy it, I dont want to be limited by piss poor frame rate on its lowest settings lol

Yeah, there is no reason to get a new computer. Most programs today don't use more than 8gb of RAM, and as sad as it is at this day and age, most programs (games included) do not thread well, or sometimes even at all, so getting more processors usually does not help much. It is usually better to have at least 2, but have them running at a high clock-speed, like 3.4ghz and up (so you are covered on that). As crazy as it is, oftentimes a dual core 3.4 can out perform an 8-core 3.0, because the program is barely using other threads to even use the other processors, or is still doing everything taxing on one thread.
