Hardware/Platform/Browser support

Hi.
Does anyone know what platforms/browsers the Engine has been tested working with? I assume it's basically anything with canvas 2d support and a reasonable processor?
I'm more interested in mobile browsers.

* IOS Safari
* Android (Stock & Chrome)
* Windows Phone
* Mobile Firefox

I've personally tested on iOS 5 Safari and Android Chrome. iOS is the best in terms of performance but Chrome is catching up on mobile (slowly). Chrome on desktop is far superior to all other desktop implementations of Canvas at the moment.

There are new performance improvements to canvas that will really help as well (they are available in Chrome as an experiment under chrome://flags). Basically the new canvas mode allows non-blending / compositing of the canvas by specifying an opaque canvas element so the browser can optimise rendering for it without compositing other elements underneath it. Will give a nice performance boost when it is available across the board!

It is irritating to me that even high-end Android devices do not come using Chrome for Android as the default browser. I understand that Android Browser must run on low-end devices, but c'mon! How about putting Chrome as the default on Galaxy Sx! But at least HTML5 features are catching up a bit on Android Browser as some of the archaic < 1Ghz single-core, < 512mb RAM devices are slowly disappearing.

Umm, I hate to point this out Jack, but my phone uses Chrome by default. It is an Android platform (4.1.2). It has Chrome embedded into it so I can't even uninstall it from the device. Irritating. But it is there, and one can always change that default, so all is good.

Whether or not my Chrome on my phone is good enough is another story. I have 10gb of storage on this thing, so I don't doubt that the OS takes up a chunk of that. I run a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 for those who want to look up the specs.

Really? So when you first got your phone, the browser icon was the same as the desktop Chrome browser? Or the icon looks like a little globe? Everything I can find on YouTube for the Note 2 looks like it is Android Browser (the globe icon). It shares many similarities with Chrome (including sharing bookmarks and settings with desktop Chrome), but they do not share the same rendering engine. Chrome for Android is pretty much the best browser for mobile devices (the one for iOS is probably equal) as far as HTML5 rendering, speed, etc.

That would make me happy if Samsung is beginning to install real Chrome for Android on their newer high-end devices.

Oh, I understand now. It is there, but Chrome is installed as well. Chrome is permanently installed. You could remove the updates, but it remains there. As for the default browser, there is the android one, but I have not used it. I had a link to it from the first start screens, but just went to using Chrome as it was already loaded on.

I figure it pretty much is integrated. Maybe they give you the choice to use Chrome or the default browser. I also have Firefox installed, as I prefer that over Chrome. So anything that I will work with on the engine, I will test with as many environments as possible.

That is weird. They should just get rid of Android Browser if it comes with Chrome preinstalled. Chrome works so much better than Android Browser for all things HTML5 :P

I received last week my new phone: an Sony Xperia Z1, and I can tell you it has chrome as default browser, and any other browser (even default android one) are not present by default. So I believe something is changing to this area too. However while I tried to test cubicverse, I can also say it doesn't work even a tiny bit on it.

Android from JellyBean onwards (I believe) has Chrome as default browser.

Weird, I have a Galaxy nexus, a Nexus 4 & a Nexus 7, all running vanilla android 4.3 they do not have Chrome installed on the stock rom, I can uninstall it completely if I wish.
Maybe default Chrome is something samsung/sony are pushing specifically in their Roms?

FYI, I have quite a few devices which I've been testing, they have a range of specs.
Here's a summary of my findings so far.

Tests were completed without bounds shown, without scene stats, with autoSections(20) using example 13.5-texturemaps-caching

FPS was measured using webkit remote debugging tools via adb.


All dual/quad core devices I've tested ran at 40fps or more, which I'd expect for any high-end device.
The devices in this group I've tested are:
* iPhone 4S & 5
* iPad2 & 3
* HTC One
* Samsung S3
* Nexus 4
* Nexus 7

Lower performing (still playable) devices that I've tested and are working with between 20-30fps
These devices are all single core, 1ghz or less, they include:
* Galaxy Nexus
* iPhone 3G & 4
* Samsung Galaxy Ace
* Nexus One

(All Android phone were tested with Chrome 30)
iOS devices were tested with iOS7 except 3G & 4 which are iOS6
