Fault - Design Document

Have a project in the works but not much media? How about an idea you are turning into a project? Maybe a game design document you want to start with. This is the place.

Fault - Design Document

Post by Last Known Hero »

Introduction
Zombie Survival. Fallout meets I am Legend, live by any means necessary.

Abstract
The game is about surviving the zombie apocalypse, when your government has turned against you with out warning. You must scavenge, invent, kill and claim your right to live.

Target Audience
The target audience has a wide area for age group (although there will be some inappropriate content) while the general gaming audience is for people who enjoy needing to be thorough, being able to go back to houses and find even more useful items than the last time you went.

Platform
The game so far will be released and tested on windows, future platforms are pending.

Unique Selling Points
- Invention system that allows a uncanny amount of different items to be created
- Inventions will be constantly being added through suggestions of the community
- Unique gameplay allowing you to scavenge during the day, while being wary of dark areas. Or being able to scavenge at night while fighting off the zombie hordes.
- First Strategic Zombie Survival allowing for run and gun, traps or passive play.
- Vast area of exploration with house interiors maxamizing areas to scavenge from including malls, department stores, houses and more.

Game Mechanics
Basic concept involves you being able to explore, create and kill. The game mechanics will contain a backpack for the character, which will allow the character to only hold a certain amount of items to maintain realism. The shelter will have storage areas capable of holding everything you drop off. Once you find certain items they will allow you to start expanding your characters abilities to be able to be better in certain aspects of the game like exploring or killing.

The game will be such a big area that you will be able to start taking your time with finding certain areas, doing certain quests, finding certain items and really enjoy what is around, although, take too long and the sun starts to set.. you better hope that you are close to your house.

Gameplay during the night can consist of you sitting on your roof killing the zombies, inventing, improving stats or just waiting until daytime. Be careful of what houses you go into, they may contain dark areas which might hide zombies who are painfully decayed by the sun.

Controls
The controls will be based on the usual WASD controls, and mouse click but will also contain a variety of other keys to do other things like open your backpack, crouch, etc.

Scoring
'Scoring' in this case refers to gaining experience. The character will gain experience by finding new locations (low amount of exp.), inventing (exp. pending on item), and killing zombies or other wondering surviving scavenger groups.

Win and Lose Conditions
You will lose the game by dying, you will be able to heal using a few techniques but winning the game will be completing the 'story'. Which will not 'win' because the game can continue afterwards allowing for more exploration!

Level Design
There are going to be many many levels. Rundown of the levels:

- Starting shelter
- City level
- Some Unique Different house levels
- 4 Unique Department store levels
- Shop levels
- 2 Unique Museum levels
- Mall level

Story
The game story is pretty short in itself. The main idea is to explore and eliminate zombies. The quests will be given out by many many different people that you will run into while in different places, or they may come to your shelter. The story starts 5 years after the out break of the virus, which was an airborne virus that affected about 90% of the population (more in some cases) but didn't seem to be able to travel far enough to infect other areas. You will run into groups of other people scavenging the wasteland but if you intend to contact them be ready to draw guns, they are looking after the group that they were with when this went down, they survive together, they die together. The "zombies" have been mutated and devolved due to this airborne virus "T15-V" which was intended to vaccinate future disease outbreaks by increasing the immune system 10 fold. The government issued it to be deployed to a specific area, which within 10 days the de-evolution would occur, slowly. Started out with more crime, assault victims and petty theft. Eventually the brain would revert back to its process of basic survival, if you are threatened on your turf then there would be a war, if you had to kill to obtain what you want then you would kill. Soon the brain had been devolved to no reasoning skills, hating the tase of food that they were accustomed to and started to eat flesh, starting with animals, then to human flesh. The decaying had turned them off the taste of their own, the vaccine had also put a nasty taste in their mouth. Some zombies appear without limbs because they were eaten before they were infected or because they were one of the few that the other zombies would taste test.

Characters
Main character will be slightly customizable by the player, also allowing the name to be entered. Other characters will be modeled after actual people I know in this city. Zombies will be plentiful at certain places/times and there will be several different zombie appearences.

Visual Style
The graphical style is going to be realism with some grunge aspect (as it has been 5 years since the outbreak). No sketches or sceen shots of any visual styling as of now.

I have few critism (Construcive of course), I wonder if using a virus as the cause is very over played, maybe that could be changed to something simple.
Other than critisms everything is perfect!

Whats your engine and is it Fps?

Yes I feel the virus is too cliche aswell, I'll start thinking on some other things (unless you have a suggestion). I will be using the UDK as the engine, although I'm a little wary because it doesn't support day/night cycles very well, although I might be able to find a way around it to cheat the day night cycle. It is very necessary for the game though.

The game will be FPS because I can save on some polys for the character (I'll just hide the character model). Yes I know you can customize the look of him at the start but that's mainly so people feel they are being unique, I cheat them that way :P

Been really busy but the zombie model is finished, I still have a few minor things to tweak but those are only going to get finished after the texturing is done. For now I have started doing some cover art art I had in my brain, will post progress under art section, then when it's finished Ill post it here.

Here is the zombie base model, not done with it as of yet, so far I want to make a t-shirt and and pants for quick customizing of several types of zombies instead of always looking at the same model. It was HEAVILY inspired by Fallout 3 and has taken me over 2 weeks and it still isn't perfect :S
I will be adding low amount of hair to make it look like it is falling out.
