A different Idea

Post by Torniquet »

Ok im exploring various idea that will make station invasion interesting.

I have hit the point of introducing items into the game. Traditionally items are found when you slay monsters, search local surroundings etc.

When i was working on trinity of ashes (my first proper game) I used crafting as a way to produce food and weaponry, the success depended on what materials matched and generated an item based on the material used and its purity. You would then name the item and be on your merry way.

This system was a nice idea, but there were no set rules for it. any number of combinations would could pass or fail, and without knowing a proper combination, you were more than likely going to waste all your materials trying and not getting anywhere.

This time around, I want to do a similar thing. However I have expanded on the idea somewhat after talking to a friend. He suggested I follow the system of minecraft, which shouldnt in theory be too hard.

This makes things just as interesting as the last system, but 100 x easier as you dont waste any materials (there will be set recipes and an item appears when the right materials are selected). Therefore it makes the process, interesting, but easy and boring (in my opinion).

So to jazz the idea up. I have come up with this plan.

The items found, will mostly be some sort of compound. The compounds need to be refined into raw materials using stabilizers which can also be found... but not as often (a 5:1 ratio of compounds to stabilizers for eg)

Its then the raw materials that are crafted into weaponry and such like. Once a raw material has been created, it also has a chance to produce excess materials like gas or liquids. These in turn can then be used to craft other things, i.e ammunition and health potions.

So in summery...

Find compounds and stabilizers (from fighting and searching) => generate raw materials (produced through refining of some sort) => craft equipment

chance after refining => Releases excess materials (liquid and gasses) => craft the excess with materials => produce potions and ammunition

So this is the plan... What I am after is whether you think that an idea like this may be over complicating things or could work nicely. :) and of course any other opinions :p

weirdly enough I am working on the crafting system for FS 3.1 as well and am going own this same road. It is a great idea and adds many more elements to the game. Like a refinery and smelters to actually break the materials down.

I play an ok (but slightly boring) PBBG called ChosenSpace, and it has a similar crafting system. You mine raw ores, then take them to a refinery and refine them into usable ore which you then use to make components and parts which are used to build ships and stations and what not. Similar simple crafting system I think.

I heard Star Wars Galaxies had the best crafting system, never played it, but watched some YouTube clips of it and it does look pretty complex.

Horizons (now called Istaria) had a similar crafting system - You had a formula (recipe) that let you make an item. You processed raw materials into bricks/bars/blocks, then used those components to actually build the item you wanted to make. No chance of failure, but as you get more skill, you become more efficient and can make things with less waste (5 iron bars to make a sword instead of 10, for example). I loved it personally - in fact, the game I am working on is going to include a similar crafting system - with some changes to hopefully make it less grind-y.

The trial and error thing some games do was OK, but once someone made something, it was all over the internet anyway, so nobody every tried anything new any more.

yes it is completely off topic and the reason I have not is because I cannot find it. I totally re-did cavern crawl and went over the old database. I have a backup somewhere but it is on an older laptop which I need to get out of the closet.
